This is a handsome 1942/41 Mercury dime overdate variety graded XF45 by NGC. This example shows some softening of the details expected for the grade, and is well above average condition for the issue. The mint inadvertently struck several dies with both a 1941 hub and a 1942 hub design, resulting in the overlaid 1942/41 date that is conspicuously visible in this variety. Not initially recognized, the coins entered circulation with few retained in mint state. Most of the examples retained today are well circulated, with an average grade of just Very Fine. Mint state examples are extremely uncommon and command a large premium.
