A handsome AU55 example of the popular 1892 Columbian Exposition commemorative half dollar. The 1892 Columbian commemorative marked the first issue of a commemorative coin by the US Mint to support the Chicago Columbian Exposition and coincided with the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ voyage to what would later become the Americas. Columbus is depicted in profile on the obverse, with the Santa Maria – Columbus’ flagship – adorning the reverse.
